EXTEND YOUR NOTEBOOK'S LIFE
Donate it When you are finished using your notebook consider donating it to a non-profit organization. While you may have outgrown its features, an organization that cannot afford technology may be able to use it for years to come.
Reuse components Your printer and mouse can be reused with a new notebook. Make sure your next notebook is compatible with these components or consider donating them.
Recycle it If you are not planning to donate your used notebook, consider recycling it in an environmentally responsible manner. Almost all of the elements in a notebook can be recycled and reused in the manufacture of new machines and other products.
Consumer electronics may be responsible for 40% of the lead found in landfills. Lead can cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous systems, blood systems, and kidneys in humans; it has also been shown to have negative effects on the development of children's brains.
BENEFITS OF NOTEBOOK RECYCLING
There are many good reasons to recycle or reuse old notebooks instead of sending them to landfills:
Conserves natural resources Valuable material can be recovered from old notebooks, and these materials can be used to make new products. For example, precious metals are used in computer circuit boards and other electronic components, and of course glass and plastics are used for new TV and computer monitors. Recycling these products reduces the need to mine the earth for new raw materials.
Supports the community Donating your old notebooks supports schools, low-income families, and non-profit agencies by providing them with refurbished ones. Individuals are helped by being able to access technology that they could not otherwise afford. Check with these groups first to make sure your notebooks meets their needs.
Creates jobs As demand for recycling grows, new businesses will be forming and existing companies will be looking to hire more people to staff their facilities to recover recyclable materials (more than 90% of electronic equipment is recyclable!).
Protect Public Health and the Environment Most electronics contain hazardous or toxic materials which can cause an environmental problem if discarded in the trash. Safely recycling and reusing it helps keep substances like lead and mercury from harming people or the environment.
Examples:
Batteries may contain lead, mercury and cadmium Monitors are hazardous because they contain significant amounts of lead Circuit boards contain hazardous metals such as lead, chromium, cadmium and mercury
