Helping a UK entrepreneur with management of investment portfolio and wealth planning

The case of a successful entrepreneur with extensive wealth needing a family office to handle everything from daily wealth to educating her children about wealth and legacy.

The situation

A successful UK entrepreneur generated her wealth from the sale of her business. She is a sophisticated investor with a strong portfolio of private equity and venture capital investments worth close to £100 million.

She asked the Family Office team to support her with the day-to-day administration of her investment portfolio, support for her inheritance and wealth transfer planning, and helping to educate her children on their own financial matters.

The client’s goals

  • She sought the smooth transfer of her day-to-day activities from a long-term single Family Office team to our Family Office Services.
  • She was looking to establish a long-term plan for handling her UK inheritance tax liability and lifetime gifting to her children.
  • She wanted to ensure her children were included in key planning meetings, particularly in relation to the Family Investment Company (“FIC”), to build an awareness and understanding of the factors influencing decision-making.

Our approach

  • The Family Office team began establishing relationships with the relevant parties at each of the client’s private equity and venture capital investment managers and administrators to ensure a smooth transition of the day-to-day responsibilities.
  • Assumed responsibility for a variety of reporting, which includes:
    • Monthly summaries of the net capital call/distributions that month.
    • “Live” summaries of the funds’ most recent quarterly valuations.
    • Working closely with an accountant to produce monthly cash flow forecast summaries.
  • Brought in members from the investment team to recommend new private equity opportunities for the client and the FIC.
  • Began facilitating all key strategic and planning meetings with the client, her internal and external teams to both plan ahead and proactively respond to unforeseen events.

Outcomes to date

  • The client is supported by her team of advisors, who are working together to manage and enhance the family’s wealth.
  • She has a clear picture of her financial affairs for ongoing decision-making.
  • We facilitated independent oversight of the FIC to help the client meet her fiduciary responsibilities.
  • The Family Office team continues to build relationships with the client’s children, helping to ensure they will be prepared to manage the wealth they inherit.
  • As the relationship has grown, we have assumed further responsibilities including our trust company being appointed as director of the FIC (alongside the client).
  • The trust company has also been appointed executor of the client’s will and has been granted Lasting Power of Attorney for Property and Finance matters.
