Planning Beyond Generations
John Schuman, Partner, Head of Wealth Transfer, shares how he supports his clients in thinking beyond taxes, helping them shape the legacy they truly want to leave behind.
At Corient, we are designed and built to serve the high net worth and ultra high net worth clients. And as such, if you think about what wealth transfer is, it's an extension of the core planning that we do for clients, but extending it beyond them to the next generation.
My name is John Schuman. I'm a Partner and Head of Wealth Transfer. You know, when you talk to clients, there's two things that they're always focused on when it comes to wealth transfer. One is they're concerned about taxes. The second thing they're always worried about is how much is enough and how much is too much.
What I like to talk to clients about is, let's ignore taxes and if you could be in the perfect world of no tax, how would you want your property to go and what purposes would you want it to serve? Absent tax, it's much easier than to understand, alright, let's put a tax overlay to that. Otherwise, I think what ends up happening is, is they start planning around the tax code rather than planning around their family.
